Electronics and Fish Finders for Bass: What to Watch on the Screen
Learn what to watch on a fish finder for bass, including 2D sonar, side imaging, forward-facing sonar, key settings, and how to read fish and cover.

A fish finder is useful only when the screen changes the next cast. 2D sonar shows depth and the water column beneath the boat, side imaging searches wide areas for cover and structure, and forward-facing sonar reveals how individual fish react in real time. Each view answers a different question, so the goal is not to stare at every panel at once. Learn what returns represent bait, bass, bottom hardness, and cover, then use the appropriate view to narrow water efficiently.
For years, we relied on educated guesses. Drive over a spot, see some arches on the old flasher, and start throwing. Now, with screens that show you a detailed picture of the bottom, side to side, and even in front of the boat in real time, there’s a whole lot more to watch. But too many guys get caught up staring at a rainbow of pixels instead of actually interpreting what the bass are doing. Learning what to look for, and more importantly, what to ignore, is the difference between catching fish and just having a really expensive depth sounder.
The Foundation: Understanding 2D Sonar
Before any of the fancy stuff, you need to understand your basic 2D sonar. This is your meat-and-potatoes view straight down, and it's still the backbone of any good setup for fish finder bass fishing. What you're seeing is sound waves bouncing off objects. The clearer and harder the object, the stronger the return.
Bass, like most predator fish, are almost always tied to two things: cover or structure, and food. Your 2D sonar shows you both. You’re looking for distinct arches or lines, which are your fish. They aren't always perfect arches, especially if they're sitting still or you're moving slow. A small cluster of dots or a faint line can still be a fish hugging the bottom. Beyond the fish themselves, pay close attention to baitfish schools – those clouds of speckled returns. If bass are feeding, they’ll be close to these.
The bottom return itself tells a story. A thick, hard line usually means rock, shell beds, or compacted clay. A softer, thinner line suggests mud or silt. Bass on Pickwick, especially smallmouth, often prefer harder bottom transitions, particularly on those offshore ledges. For example, a sharp break where a hard clay bottom transitions to a softer, mucky creek channel can be a hotspot. A good unit set to a decent sensitivity, say around 80-85% in 25-40 feet of water, will show these distinctions clearly. Don't be afraid to adjust your gain and range. Too many guys leave it on auto and miss half the picture.
Expanding Your View: Side Imaging for Bass
Once you’ve got a handle on 2D, side imaging bass is the next step in really painting a picture of what’s around your boat. Instead of just looking down, side imaging sends out fan-shaped beams to the left and right, covering a huge swath of water. This is invaluable for finding structure and fish without driving directly over them, which can often spook them.
I use side imaging constantly on Kentucky Lake during the summer ledge season, or even on the Mississippi flood control lakes like Sardis when they pull water. Instead of running back and forth over a known ledge, I can stay off to the side, maybe 50-80 feet, and scan for brush piles, rock formations, or even individual stumps that might be holding fish. You'll see these as bright returns with distinct shadows trailing them, indicating their height off the bottom. A tall brush pile will have a long, dark shadow. Isolated timber or rock piles on those deeper creek channels often hold the biggest fish, and you can see them clearly with side imaging.
Most guys driving around with side imaging go too fast. You can’t get a clear, detailed image of structure at 15 mph. I’ll typically run my boat around 3-5 mph when I’m specifically looking for new structure or trying to identify exactly what's on a spot. For example, I might have a general idea of a brush pile, but by slowing down and making a few passes with Humminbird Mega Side Imaging or Lowrance StructureScan, I can often tell if it’s a loose pile of limbs or a tightly packed cedar tree. This detail helps me choose the right bait – a jig for tight cover, a crankbait for looser stuff. Remember, the clearer the water, the better your range, but quality of image also depends on your speed. Slow down, and you’ll see more.
The Real-Time Game Changer: Forward-Facing Sonar
Now we get to the one that’s changed more about bass fishing in the last five years than anything else: forward-facing sonar. Systems like Garmin LiveScope bass fishing setups or Lowrance ActiveTarget are showing us a real-time, three-dimensional view of what's happening in front of the boat. I’ve said it before, it’s a tool, not a religion, and it’s actually made me a worse shallow-water angler because I stopped reading the surface cues as much. But for seeing fish on deep ledges or suspended in open water, there's nothing else like it.
What you watch on the screen with FFS is a live feed. You’ll see your lure as a distinct return, and you'll see individual fish. This is where it gets interesting. Instead of just guessing, you can see if a bass is suspending above a brush pile, if it's hugging the bottom, or if it's actively chasing bait. You can pitch a jig or a Neko rig to an individual fish and watch its reaction. Does it dart towards the bait? Does it ignore it? Does it swim away? This feedback loop is instant and has taught me a ton about how fish posture and react to different presentations and speeds.
Last January on Pickwick, I had one of those rare clear, calm mornings with the water down to 44 degrees. I was fishing the lower end ledges with a Megabass Vision 110 Jr. in French Pearl. My go-to in that cold water is a stupid-long pause – I’m talking 25 seconds, timed out loud. I’d seen other guides earlier in the week fishing the same areas with jerkbaits, but they weren't catching much. With my LiveScope, I could see individual bass sitting on the breaks in 18-22 feet. I'd cast the jerkbait out and twitch it a few times, then stop. I could literally watch the fish on the screen. With shorter pauses, they'd stay put, occasionally turning their head, but no commitment. But when I got that 25-second count in, almost every time, a fish would slowly swim over, inspect the bait, and often, just inhale it. That kind of visual confirmation, watching a fish go from ambivalent to committed, tells you more than a thousand casts without electronics ever could. It proves that the pause isn't just a dead moment; it's part of the action.
The Data Overlay: Why Settings Matter
Having all these different sonar views available is powerful, but it's also easy to get overwhelmed. You've got 2D, side imaging, maybe down imaging, and then forward-facing sonar. A lot of guys run split screens, and that’s smart. My typical setup has a large screen for LiveScope, and a smaller one split between 2D and side imaging. The critical thing is to simplify what you’re looking at and focus on the data that matters most.
Beyond the actual fish and structure returns, your screen is also displaying crucial data. Water temperature is probably the most important overlay. Bass are cold-blooded, and their metabolism and activity levels are directly tied to water temp. Knowing if the water is 55 degrees or 65 degrees dramatically changes my bait and retrieve choices. Current speed, if your unit can display it, is also huge, especially on TVA lakes like Pickwick or Chickamauga where the generation schedule dictates everything. Depth, obviously, and your boat speed over ground are also non-negotiable data points.
Conventional wisdom will tell you to load up your screens with every piece of information possible. But I find too many overlays just create clutter. When I'm actively fishing, I don't need my GPS coordinates flashing in big numbers, or my heading indicator taking up a quarter of the screen. Keep it clean. Set up your custom views for different situations – one for searching with side imaging, one for targeting with FFS, and a simple 2D for running. A 2D cone angle of 20 degrees, a side imaging range of 80 feet on each side, and a forward-facing cone width set at 20 degrees are good starting points for getting clear images in most of my home waters. Spend time in your driveway learning the menus and settings; don't wait until you're on the water and the fish are biting.
Putting It All Together: The Angler's Eye
Electronics are an incredible advancement for bass fishing, no doubt about it. They've peeled back the curtain on the underwater world in ways we couldn't have imagined a couple of decades ago. But they're still just tools. They don't replace time on the water, understanding bait movements, or feeling the bottom with a jig. I mentioned earlier that LiveScope has probably made me a worse shallow-water angler. It's true. Before FFS, I spent more time watching birds, looking for subtle ripples, studying changes in current flows around visible cover. Now, it's easy to get sucked into staring at a screen for hours, trying to pick out every fish.
The biggest skill in fishing is knowing when to leave a spot. Most guys stay 20 minutes too long, but with electronics, it's easy to stay an hour too long, chasing ghosts on the screen. The real advantage comes when you blend what your electronics are telling you with all the other knowledge you’ve accumulated. If my LiveScope shows me fish on a ledge, but they’re not reacting to anything, maybe it’s a post-front funk, and I need to drop down to a small jig and barely move it. Or maybe they’ve just shut down, and it's time to try a different piece of structure entirely.
Don't let the screens replace your instincts. Use them to confirm, to learn, and to adapt. Watch what your electronics are showing you, but always, always, keep an eye on the water itself. The bass are still in there, doing what bass do. Your electronics are just giving you a better way to listen.
