Drop Shot Fishing on White Bear Lake
White Bear Lake · Minnesota · Midwest
This natural lake, covering over 2,400 acres, is characterized by its clear water, varied bottom content including rock, sand, and extensive deep weed lines. While popular for recreation, it provides excellent opportunities for anglers pursuing both largemouth and smallmouth bass, often in conjunction with its healthy populations of northern pike.
The drop shot suspends a soft plastic bait above the bottom on a fixed line, keeping it in the strike zone longer than any other rig. Originally a West Coast technique, it now dominates clear-water and finesse situations nationwide. Works vertically over structure or on a long cast.

Seasonal Tactics on White Bear Lake
Lake: Bass migrate to shallow, warming bays and emergent weed growth, with prespawn and spawning activity focused around docks and isolated cover in 3-8 feet of water.
Drop Shot: Target staging fish on points and drop-offs in 8–20 feet. Nose-hook a 6" Roboworm or Berkley PowerBait MaxScent Flat Worm.
Lake: Largemouth relate to the deep weed edges (12-20 feet) and dense vegetation mats, while smallmouth gravitate towards offshore rock reefs and main lake points, often suspending over deeper water.
Drop Shot: Go deep — 20–40 feet on main lake structure. Shake in place with minimal movement. Shad colors dominate.
Lake: As water temperatures drop, bass become more aggressive, chasing baitfish in transition areas like channel swings and break lines before settling into deeper wintering holes.
Drop Shot: Follow baitfish to secondary points and pockets. Faster retrieve works as fish get more aggressive.
Lake: During ice-covered months, bass can be found holding tight to deep structure, responding to vertical presentations for lethargic fish near significant depth changes and hard-bottom features.
Drop Shot: Slowest presentation of the year. Dead-stick a 4" finesse worm at the bottom. Let it sit 10–15 seconds between shakes.
Best Conditions
Clear to stained water, pressured fish, cold fronts, post-spawn suspended bass, deep structure in summer
Use a Palomar knot and leave the tag end pointing up to keep the hook riding correctly. Most anglers tie it wrong.
