Texas Rig Fishing on Lake Wappapello
Lake Wappapello · Missouri · Midwest
Lake Wappapello is a scenic 8,400-acre reservoir created by a dam on the St. Francis River, featuring excellent structure including standing timber, rocky outcrops, and deep channels that attract quality bass populations. The lake's relatively clear water and abundant natural cover make it a premier destination for both largemouth and smallmouth bass in the Midwest. With depths ranging from shallow flats to over 60 feet, Wappapello offers year-round fishing opportunities and consistent tournament-quality bass.
A bullet sinker slides freely on the line ahead of a wide-gap hook with a weedless-rigged soft plastic. The rig is completely snag-resistant, making it the go-to choice for grass, timber, and heavy cover. Works with virtually any soft plastic — worms, craws, creatures, lizards.

Seasonal Tactics on Lake Wappapello
Lake: Spring spawning activity brings aggressive largemouth bass to shallow coves and creek arms as water temperatures warm into the 60s. Focus on flats adjacent to deeper water where bass transition from winter staging areas.
Texas Rig: Slow drag through spawning flats and around beds. Lizards and creature baits in crawfish colors.
Lake: Summer bass move deeper into the main lake and creek channels, suspending around the abundant standing timber and submerged structure. Early morning and evening topwater activity can be productive before heat drives fish to deeper, cooler water.
Texas Rig: Pitch into shade — docks, mats, and laydowns. Pegged weight for matted grass punching.
Lake: Fall cooling water triggers aggressive feeding as bass chase shad around rocky points and timber-lined banks throughout the main lake. The seasonal turnover can produce excellent topwater and crankbait fishing from September through October.
Texas Rig: Cover water quickly on points and along weed lines. Faster retrieve with a reaction element.
Lake: Winter bass congregate in the deepest holes and creek channels, with the primary dam area holding concentrations of fish. Vertical jigging and slow presentations around the 40-60 foot depths produce steady winter catches.
Texas Rig: Slow drag on deep structure, 15–30 feet. Finesse Texas rig with 1/4 oz and 6" worm.
Best Conditions
Heavy cover — grass, timber, laydowns, docks; murky to stained water; any season; pre-spawn and post-spawn periods
Peg the weight with a rubber toothpick when fishing grass. A sliding weight catches weeds; a pegged weight punches through clean.
