Jig (Casting & Pitching) Fishing on Lake Pleasant

Lake Pleasant · Arizona · West

Lake Pleasant is Arizona's third-largest lake by surface area, covering over 10,000 acres with a scenic desert landscape. The lake features numerous creek arms, rocky points, and deep channels that provide excellent habitat for both largemouth and smallmouth bass. With minimal vegetation and clear water, sight-fishing and structure-based techniques are highly effective throughout the year.

A lead or tungsten head with a weed guard, skirt, and soft plastic trailer. Fished on the bottom by pitching, casting, or slow-rolling. The jig imitates crawfish and bottom-dwelling forage. More big bass have been caught on jigs than any other lure category — it's the lure that separates serious anglers.

Seasonal Tactics on Lake Pleasant

spring

Lake: Spring sees bass moving to shallow flats and spawning areas around the lake's numerous creek arms. Crankbaits and soft plastics targeting 6-12 foot depths produce excellent results as water temperatures warm.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Pre-spawn is prime season — pitch brown/green pumpkin jig to 45° bank transitions and rocky points.

summer

Lake: Summer bass retreat to deeper structure including drop-offs and rocky channels in 25-40 foot depths. Early morning topwater and deep-diving crankbaits near the main lake channel are most productive.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Football jig on offshore ledges 15–30 feet. Swimming jig around grass edges at dawn.

fall

Lake: Fall brings bass back to shallower structure as water temperatures cool and forage becomes more active. Jigs and Texas-rigged worms around rocky points and creek ledges produce excellent results.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Swim a jig around baitfish schools near points and flats. Shad trailer colors in fall.

winter

Lake: Winter fishing focuses on the deepest areas of the lake where bass congregate in 40-60 foot depths. Vertical jigging and slow-presentations near the dam and main channel ledges are most effective.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Slowest presentation — drag a 3/8 oz football jig on deep hard bottom. Barely move it.

Best Conditions

All seasons, all depths, all cover types; most effective in 50–70°F water; excellent in pre-spawn and when fish are on hard bottom

Pro Tip

Match trailer to conditions: craw trailer in cold water (slower fall, bigger profile), swimbait trailer when swimming, chunk trailer for flipping.
