Jig (Casting & Pitching) Fishing on Lake of the Woods
Lake of the Woods · Minnesota · Midwest
Spanning over a million acres across Minnesota, Manitoba, and Ontario, Lake of the Woods is a dynamic shield lake defined by countless islands, rocky reefs, and dramatic depth changes. Primarily known for its world-class walleye and musky, it also harbors a robust population of hard-fighting smallmouth bass, especially in its Minnesota waters.
A lead or tungsten head with a weed guard, skirt, and soft plastic trailer. Fished on the bottom by pitching, casting, or slow-rolling. The jig imitates crawfish and bottom-dwelling forage. More big bass have been caught on jigs than any other lure category — it's the lure that separates serious anglers.

Seasonal Tactics on Lake of the Woods
Lake: Smallmouth move into protected bays and shallower rock structures as water temperatures climb, often congregating around warming points and secondary breaks for pre-spawn feeding.
Jig (Casting & Pitching): Pre-spawn is prime season — pitch brown/green pumpkin jig to 45° bank transitions and rocky points.
Lake: During summer, smallmouth transition to deeper main lake humps, rocky ledges, and current seams, frequently suspending over baitfish schools or holding tight to bottom structure in 20-40 feet.
Jig (Casting & Pitching): Football jig on offshore ledges 15–30 feet. Swimming jig around grass edges at dawn.
Lake: As water cools, smallmouth aggressively feed on migrating baitfish in transition areas, concentrating on main lake points, offshore reefs, and steeper breaks before moving to deeper wintering grounds.
Jig (Casting & Pitching): Swim a jig around baitfish schools near points and flats. Shad trailer colors in fall.
Lake: The bass fishing season concludes as ice forms, but the smallmouth remain deep on main lake structure. Open water fishing for bass is not feasible during the extensive ice-covered period.
Jig (Casting & Pitching): Slowest presentation — drag a 3/8 oz football jig on deep hard bottom. Barely move it.
Best Conditions
All seasons, all depths, all cover types; most effective in 50–70°F water; excellent in pre-spawn and when fish are on hard bottom
Match trailer to conditions: craw trailer in cold water (slower fall, bigger profile), swimbait trailer when swimming, chunk trailer for flipping.
