Wacky Rig Fishing on Lake LBJ
Lake LBJ · Texas · South Central
This impoundment of the Colorado River maintains a consistent water level, fostering stable habitat for both largemouth and smallmouth bass. Its deep, clear waters feature numerous boat docks, seawalls, rocky shorelines, and planted brush piles, presenting varied challenges and rewards for anglers.
A Yamamoto Senko or similar soft stick bait hooked through the middle so both ends fall and quiver independently. The wacky-rigged Senko falling through the water column produces a fluttering action that triggers strikes on the fall constantly. Exceptional in shallow water around docks, laydowns, and vegetation.

Seasonal Tactics on Lake LBJ
Lake: Bass migrate to shallow cover for spawning, with docks, seawalls, and submerged brush holding fish in the 3-8 ft range. Reaction baits like lipless cranks and slow-rolled spinnerbaits are effective, as are soft plastics worked slowly.
Wacky Rig: Spawn and post-spawn — drop next to every dock post and laydown. Natural and green pumpkin.
Lake: Largemouth primarily retreat to deeper offshore structure, brush piles, and the shade of docks, often in 15-30 ft of water as the thermocline sets. Night fishing becomes a dominant pattern for larger fish, especially around lighted docks.
Wacky Rig: Dock shade in morning and evening. Drop and count it down on the fall. Many bites come before it hits bottom.
Lake: As water temperatures cool, bass become more active and follow migrating shad into creek arms and shallower main lake coves. Schooling activity is common, with topwater lures, jerkbaits, and swimbaits producing bites.
Wacky Rig: Transition fish around remaining shallow structure. Watermelon and natural colors.
Lake: Bass generally suspend or relate tightly to deep structure, such as main lake points, bluff walls, and submerged brush in 20-45 ft. Slow-moving baits like jerkbaits, Alabama rigs, and spoons are often most effective.
Wacky Rig: Add a small nail weight to get deeper, fish like a drop shot. Less effective than rigged alternatives in cold.
Best Conditions
Dock fishing, shallow clear water, post-spawn beds and staging areas, finesse situations, any time bass are in 2–12 feet
Use an O-ring on the worm — thread it on the middle and hook through the O-ring, not the worm. You'll catch 5–10x more fish per bait because the worm won't tear.
