Carolina Rig Fishing on Lake Gaston
Lake Gaston · Virginia / North Carolina · Southeast
Lake Gaston is a sprawling 20,000-acre impoundment on the Roanoke River that straddles the Virginia-North Carolina state line. The lake features extensive timber, rocky points, creek channels, and shallow flats that create ideal bass habitat throughout its 90-mile length. It's renowned for producing quality largemouth and smallmouth bass, making it a top-tier destination for serious anglers in the Southeast.
A 3/4–1 oz bullet or egg sinker rides on the main line ahead of a barrel swivel, followed by an 18–24 inch fluorocarbon leader and weedless soft plastic. The weight thumps the bottom and stirs up silt while the bait floats up and glides naturally. Exceptional for covering points, humps, and offshore structure quickly.

Seasonal Tactics on Lake Gaston
Lake: Spring bass on Lake Gaston move into the creek arms and shallow flats as water temperatures warm, with spawning activity peaking in April and May. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics around new vegetation growth are highly effective during this pre-spawn and spawn period.
Carolina Rig: Post-spawn fish pulled off beds to first break lines. Lizards and big creature baits.
Lake: Summer bass transition to deeper timber, creek channels, and rocky structure in 15-30 feet of water as the lake warms. Early morning and evening topwater action can be excellent, while deep-water techniques like Carolina rigging and drop-shotting produce consistent results during midday hours.
Carolina Rig: Primary technique on main lake ledges and offshore humps in 15–30 feet. Slow drag and pause.
Lake: Fall brings some of the best fishing of the year as bass move to main-lake points, creek ledges, and shallow structure in preparation for winter. Crankbaits, shad-pattern swimbaits, and topwater lures excel as bass feed aggressively throughout September and October.
Carolina Rig: Shad-imitating plastics on transitional structure as fish chase baitfish migrations.
Lake: Winter fishing remains productive on Lake Gaston despite cooler temperatures, with bass holding in deeper channels and around dense timber. Slow-moving baits like jigs, drop-shots, and soft plastics fished vertically or along bottom contours produce steady catches from December through February.
Carolina Rig: Slower retrieve, smaller plastic (4" straight worm). Fish it like a drop shot you drag.

Add a glass bead between the weight and swivel — the click mimics crawfish and triggers reaction strikes, especially on hard bottom.
