Hollow Body Frog Fishing on Lake Eufaula
Lake Eufaula · Oklahoma · South Central
Lake Eufaula is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impoundment on the Canadian River in eastern Oklahoma, covering approximately 102,000 surface acres at full pool. The reservoir holds an enormous mix of flooded timber, submerged creek channels running 15–30 feet deep, shallow flats with seasonal milfoil and hydrilla, and clay-bank pockets. Water clarity fluctuates dramatically — the upper arms run stained to muddy most of the year, while the lower main lake and Gaines Creek arm can clear to 2–4 feet following stable weather. Largemouth bass dominate, with spotted bass present in the clearer, deeper portions of the main lake.
A soft, hollow body with two upturned hooks that rides over surface vegetation completely weedless. Work it across mats, let it fall into pockets, and work it around pad edges. When a bass grabs it from below, the soft body collapses and the hooks drive home. Big-fish technique — frog fishing consistently produces 4+ pound fish.

Seasonal Tactics on Lake Eufaula
Lake: Pre-spawn largemouth push into the 4–8 ft range around flooded timber and clay points as water temps climb through the 58–65°F window, typically mid-March through April. Shallow jigs and Texas-rigged creature baits fished tight to wood produce the most consistent bites before the full spawn locks fish in coves.
Hollow Body Frog: Fish the edges of sparse early grass and around pads as water warms above 60°F.
Lake: By late June, fish stratify and chase shad along submerged creek channel edges in 12–20 ft of water, particularly in the Gaines Creek and North Canadian arms. Ledge fishing with 3/4 oz Carolina rigs and deep-diving crankbaits accounts for the larger summer largemouth, while topwater and frogs stay productive on the shallow timber flats at dawn.
Hollow Body Frog: Prime season. Work across matted grass and punch into pockets. Midday bite can be excellent under mats.
Lake: October and November trigger one of Eufaula's best feeding windows as largemouth chase shad migrations into the backs of pockets and up the stained creek arms. Lipless crankbaits worked over 4–8 ft grass edges and spinnerbaits around timber produce aggressive reaction strikes through mid-November.
Hollow Body Frog: Fish open pockets in dying grass. Work slowly as fish become less aggressive.
Lake: Winter fish compress onto main-lake points and deeper channel bends in the 18–28 ft range, moving slowly and responding best to finesse presentations. A 1/2 oz football jig dragged painfully slow over clay-bottom channel swings in 55–58°F water is among the most reliable cold-season patterns on the lower lake.
Hollow Body Frog: Not applicable — bass leave shallow vegetation in cold water.
Best Conditions
Thick grass mats, lily pads, surface vegetation, shallow water in summer, post-spawn through fall, morning and evening
Wait on the hookset. After the explosion, lower the rod tip slightly and wait until you feel pressure before sweeping hard. Premature hooksets cost half your fish.
