Hollow Body Frog Fishing on Lake Dora

Lake Dora · Florida · Southeast

This Central Florida lake presents a diverse shallow-water environment with extensive hydrilla beds, lily pads, and cypress tree lines, often featuring stained to moderately clear water. Anglers primarily target robust largemouth bass that relate heavily to the abundant aquatic vegetation and hard bottom edges connecting to the larger Harris Chain.

A soft, hollow body with two upturned hooks that rides over surface vegetation completely weedless. Work it across mats, let it fall into pockets, and work it around pad edges. When a bass grabs it from below, the soft body collapses and the hooks drive home. Big-fish technique — frog fishing consistently produces 4+ pound fish.

Seasonal Tactics on Lake Dora

spring

Lake: Bass push shallow to spawn, concentrating in protected coves and around cypress trees, often biting flukes, soft plastics, and topwater baits in 2-5 feet of water.

Hollow Body Frog: Fish the edges of sparse early grass and around pads as water warms above 60°F.

summer

Lake: Fish seek deeper hydrilla edges or shaded areas under pads and docks, responding well to punching rigs, frogs, and offshore cranking around the 6-8 foot range.

Hollow Body Frog: Prime season. Work across matted grass and punch into pockets. Midday bite can be excellent under mats.

fall

Lake: As water temperatures cool, bass become more active, chasing shad in open water and moving to outside grass lines, making spinnerbaits and bladed jigs highly effective.

Hollow Body Frog: Fish open pockets in dying grass. Work slowly as fish become less aggressive.

winter

Lake: Though milder than northern winters, bass here can be caught slow-rolling lipless crankbaits through grass or working jerkbaits on calm, sunny days in areas with 4-7 feet of depth.

Hollow Body Frog: Not applicable — bass leave shallow vegetation in cold water.

Best Conditions

Thick grass mats, lily pads, surface vegetation, shallow water in summer, post-spawn through fall, morning and evening

Pro Tip

Wait on the hookset. After the explosion, lower the rod tip slightly and wait until you feel pressure before sweeping hard. Premature hooksets cost half your fish.
