Hiwassee Lake sits at roughly 1,530 feet of elevation in the Blue Ridge foothills, impounded by TVA's Hiwassee Dam on the Hiwassee River. The reservoir tends toward excellent clarity — often 10 to 15 feet of visibility — with a rocky, steeply sloping bottom, scattered main-lake points, and creek arms that shallow up considerably. It's a three-species bass fishery, with spotted bass increasingly dominating the mid-depth zones, smallmouth occupying the harder bottom transitions, and largemouth pushing into the flatter, woodsier creek arms.
Ned Rig pairs a 3–4" ElaZtech-style floating plastic (TRD, Finesse TRD, or similar) on a 1/15–1/6 oz mushroom head jig. The bait's buoyancy causes it to stand upright on the bottom, creating a subtle action that triggers bites when nothing else will. Exceptional on hard bottom, gravel, and rock.

Seasonal Tactics on Hiwassee Lake
Lake: Bass move onto main-lake points and upper creek arms as water temps climb through the 55–65°F window; spotted bass and smallmouth stage on 8–15 ft rocky shelves before pushing shallower, and a finesse jig or shaky head on those transition edges produces before the full spawn push.
Ned Rig: Deadly on pre-spawn fish holding on gravel and pea-gravel flats in 4–12 feet.
Lake: Thermocline development pushes bass to suspend over deep structure by July and August — most fish stack up on main-lake points and channel swings in 20–35 ft, with a drop shot or heavy swimbait on a lighter head keeping the bait in the strike zone longer than reaction gear.
Ned Rig: Work deeper rock piles and main lake points. Drag slowly, let it stand. Green pumpkin and watermelon dominate.
Lake: Shad migrations pull spotted bass and smallmouth up into the 10–18 ft range on secondary points and channel bends through October and into November; a 3/8 oz spinnerbait or a walking topwater at first light can produce surprising numbers before the fish push back deep.
Ned Rig: One of the best techniques as fish get finicky before winter. Match shad colors on sandy/gravel bottom.
Lake: Cold, clear water concentrates bass in 25–40 ft on main-lake bluff transitions and deeper point ends; a 1/2 oz football jig fished dead-slow on rocky bottom or a Megabass Vision 110 worked on extended pauses are the two most consistent winter producers here.
Ned Rig: Best cold-water finesse technique after drop shot. Extremely slow drag on hard bottom near deep structure.
