Finesse Jig Fishing on Higgins Lake

Higgins Lake · Michigan · Midwest

Higgins Lake is a 9,600-acre glacial lake in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, renowned for extraordinary water clarity that routinely exceeds 25 feet of visibility. The basin drops sharply from sandy nearshore flats into a cold, deep bowl — structure that concentrates smallmouth bass along transitional edges and rocky points. Largemouth are present but secondary; this is primarily a smallmouth fishery that rewards technical anglers willing to fish slower and lighter than they're used to.

A compact, lighter jig (3/16–5/16 oz) with a smaller profile skirt, typically fished on spinning gear with a small craw or chunk trailer. The finesse jig excels in clear water, post-cold-front conditions, and whenever fish are inactive and unwilling to commit to a larger bait. It's the bridge between full-size jig fishing and drop shot-style finesse.

Seasonal Tactics on Higgins Lake

spring

Lake: Smallmouth move onto sandy flats and rocky points in 6–12 ft as water temperatures climb through the low 50s in late May. Drop shots and tube jigs in natural colors produce as fish stage near gravel patches before the spawn.

Finesse Jig: Pre-spawn on gravel and rock. Drag and hop on the bottom with a small craw trailer.

summer

Lake: Post-spawn bass push to deeper transitional edges in 18–30 ft, hugging the first hard break off sandy flats. Ned rigs and finesse swimbaits on light fluorocarbon outperform heavier reaction presentations in the ultra-clear summer water.

Finesse Jig: Rocky points and dock ends. Slower than casting jig, more subtle. Green pumpkin/black-blue.

fall

Lake: Cooling temps pull smallmouth back shallow through September and October, often within 5–10 ft of surface over rock and gravel. Jerkbaits and small swimbait heads with 3.3" Keitech Fat Swing Impacts cover water effectively as fish chase shiners and perch fry.

Finesse Jig: Natural baitfish colors on transition structure. Pairs well with a swimbait-style trailer in fall.

winter

Lake: Ice fishing dominates the winter period, with tip-ups and small jigging spoons targeting smallmouth suspended over deeper basin edges. Open-water bass fishing is largely inactive once surface temps fall below 45°F.

Finesse Jig: Excellent cold-water jig — smaller profile triggers lethargic fish that won't eat a full-size jig.

Best Conditions

Clear water, post-cold-front, rocky and hard bottom, pressured fish, 50–70°F water, shallow to mid-depth (4–15 feet)

Pro Tip

The finesse jig excels on a 1–2 foot leader straight to the bait with no swivel. Keep the connection direct for maximum sensitivity to detect subtle bites.
