Jig (Casting & Pitching) Fishing on Falls Lake

Falls Lake · North Carolina · Southeast

Falls Lake is a well-managed 12,400-acre impoundment that serves as a premier bass fishing destination in the North Carolina piedmont region. The lake features a mix of creek channels, submerged timber, grass flats, and rocky structure that creates ideal habitat for both largemouth and smallmouth bass. Known for healthy fish populations and regular stocking, Falls Lake offers productive fishing across all seasons with access to numerous public boat ramps.

A lead or tungsten head with a weed guard, skirt, and soft plastic trailer. Fished on the bottom by pitching, casting, or slow-rolling. The jig imitates crawfish and bottom-dwelling forage. More big bass have been caught on jigs than any other lure category — it's the lure that separates serious anglers.

Seasonal Tactics on Falls Lake

spring

Lake: Spring brings excellent pre-spawn and spawn activity as water temperatures rise into the 60s and 70s. Target shallow flats with vegetation, spawning areas near creek channels, and transitional zones where bass move from deep winter habitat into shallower feeding grounds.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Pre-spawn is prime season — pitch brown/green pumpkin jig to 45° bank transitions and rocky points.

summer

Lake: Summer bass move deeper to cooler creek channels and submerged timber in 20-30 feet of water, with early morning topwater bite and deep structure fishing producing the best results. Grass bed edges and shade provide daytime refuge from intense heat.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Football jig on offshore ledges 15–30 feet. Swimming jig around grass edges at dawn.

fall

Lake: Fall is a prime season as cooling water temperatures trigger aggressive feeding and bass move back to shallow flats and grass beds. Creek channels and points become hot spots as forage baitfish school and bass gorge before winter.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Swim a jig around baitfish schools near points and flats. Shad trailer colors in fall.

winter

Lake: Winter fishing slows but remains productive in the deepest creek channels and near the dam where bass concentrate in 25-40 feet of water. Slow presentations with live bait or deep-diving crankbaits near brush piles and submerged timber produce winter catches.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Slowest presentation — drag a 3/8 oz football jig on deep hard bottom. Barely move it.

Best Conditions

All seasons, all depths, all cover types; most effective in 50–70°F water; excellent in pre-spawn and when fish are on hard bottom

Pro Tip

Match trailer to conditions: craw trailer in cold water (slower fall, bigger profile), swimbait trailer when swimming, chunk trailer for flipping.
