Carolina Rig Fishing on Elephant Butte Reservoir
Elephant Butte Reservoir · New Mexico · West
Elephant Butte Reservoir spans over 36,000 acres and offers diverse structure including rocky points, coves, and submerged timber ideal for bass hunting. This desert reservoir experiences significant water level fluctuations that create unique fishing conditions and excellent opportunities for both largemouth and smallmouth bass. The lake's warm New Mexico sun and varied habitat make it a year-round bass fishing destination with excellent potential for trophy catches.
A 3/4–1 oz bullet or egg sinker rides on the main line ahead of a barrel swivel, followed by an 18–24 inch fluorocarbon leader and weedless soft plastic. The weight thumps the bottom and stirs up silt while the bait floats up and glides naturally. Exceptional for covering points, humps, and offshore structure quickly.

Seasonal Tactics on Elephant Butte Reservoir
Lake: Spring brings warming water temperatures that trigger aggressive bass feeding around shallow flats and rocky banks as spawning season approaches, making spinnerbaits and crankbaits highly effective.
Carolina Rig: Post-spawn fish pulled off beds to first break lines. Lizards and big creature baits.
Lake: Summer bass move deeper to thermocline layers and seek cooler water around deeper channel ledges and submerged structures, requiring anglers to fish deeper presentations like Carolina rigs and drop shots.
Carolina Rig: Primary technique on main lake ledges and offshore humps in 15–30 feet. Slow drag and pause.
Lake: Fall cooling water temperatures push bass back to shallower feeding zones and points where baitfish congregate, making topwater and jerkbait presentations excellent choices.
Carolina Rig: Shad-imitating plastics on transitional structure as fish chase baitfish migrations.
Lake: Winter bass slow significantly and relate to the deepest main lake channels and creek channels where they conserve energy, requiring patience with slow-moving presentations like jigs and live shiners.
Carolina Rig: Slower retrieve, smaller plastic (4" straight worm). Fish it like a drop shot you drag.
