Drop Shot Fishing on El Capitan Reservoir

El Capitan Reservoir · California · West

El Capitan Reservoir is a popular Southern California bass fishing destination located in San Diego County, featuring clear water and diverse habitat including rocky points, submerged structure, and sandy flats. The lake holds a healthy population of both largemouth and smallmouth bass, with fish regularly exceeding five pounds. Its relatively stable water levels and moderate elevation make it accessible throughout the year for dedicated anglers.

The drop shot suspends a soft plastic bait above the bottom on a fixed line, keeping it in the strike zone longer than any other rig. Originally a West Coast technique, it now dominates clear-water and finesse situations nationwide. Works vertically over structure or on a long cast.

Seasonal Tactics on El Capitan Reservoir

spring

Lake: Spring brings excellent bass activity as water temperatures warm into the 60s-70s. Spawning largemouths move to shallow areas and grass beds, while smallmouths transition to rocky structures along the main lake channels.

Drop Shot: Target staging fish on points and drop-offs in 8–20 feet. Nose-hook a 6" Roboworm or Berkley PowerBait MaxScent Flat Worm.

summer

Lake: Summer bass retreat to deeper points and channel ledges as water temperatures exceed 80 degrees. Early morning and evening topwater sessions produce hits, while daytime fishing benefits from deep-diving crankbaits and Carolina rigs on offshore structure.

Drop Shot: Go deep — 20–40 feet on main lake structure. Shake in place with minimal movement. Shad colors dominate.

fall

Lake: Fall cooling water temperatures trigger aggressive feeding throughout the lake as bass move up from summer depths. The transition months of September and October offer some of the year's best bite on topwater plugs and swimbaits around shallow cover.

Drop Shot: Follow baitfish to secondary points and pockets. Faster retrieve works as fish get more aggressive.

winter

Lake: Winter fishing remains productive with bass holding on deep main channel points and submerged structure in 20-40 feet of water. Slow presentations like drop shots, shaky heads, and finesse worms work best in the cooler water temperatures.

Drop Shot: Slowest presentation of the year. Dead-stick a 4" finesse worm at the bottom. Let it sit 10–15 seconds between shakes.

Best Conditions

Clear to stained water, pressured fish, cold fronts, post-spawn suspended bass, deep structure in summer

Pro Tip

Use a Palomar knot and leave the tag end pointing up to keep the hook riding correctly. Most anglers tie it wrong.
