Jig (Casting & Pitching) Fishing on Cherokee Lake

Cherokee Lake · Tennessee · Southeast

This extensive reservoir on the Holston River is characterized by a strong riverine influence, varying from stained, shallower water upstream to clear, deeper conditions near the dam. Cherokee Lake features abundant rock bluffs, main channel ledges, points, and submerged timber, providing complex habitat for its robust bass populations.

A lead or tungsten head with a weed guard, skirt, and soft plastic trailer. Fished on the bottom by pitching, casting, or slow-rolling. The jig imitates crawfish and bottom-dwelling forage. More big bass have been caught on jigs than any other lure category — it's the lure that separates serious anglers.

Seasonal Tactics on Cherokee Lake

spring

Lake: Bass migrate to staging areas on main lake points and creek channel bends as water temperatures climb into the low 50s, eventually moving shallow to spawn. Jerkbaits and shallow crankbaits are effective on rocky banks.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Pre-spawn is prime season — pitch brown/green pumpkin jig to 45° bank transitions and rocky points.

summer

Lake: Largemouth and smallmouth relate to main lake ledges, humps, and channel swings, often holding in 15 to 30 feet of water. Deep cranking and football jigs are dominant presentations during current generation periods.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Football jig on offshore ledges 15–30 feet. Swimming jig around grass edges at dawn.

fall

Lake: As shad schools push into creek arms and main lake flats, bass follow the bait. Topwater lures, spinnerbaits, and lipless crankbaits can produce aggressive bites in these feeding frenzies.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Swim a jig around baitfish schools near points and flats. Shad trailer colors in fall.

winter

Lake: Bass typically school up on deep main lake structure, such as channel bends and submerged timber. Slow-rolled Alabama rigs and deep suspending jerkbaits often entice bites in the colder water, especially during stable weather.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Slowest presentation — drag a 3/8 oz football jig on deep hard bottom. Barely move it.

Best Conditions

All seasons, all depths, all cover types; most effective in 50–70°F water; excellent in pre-spawn and when fish are on hard bottom

Pro Tip

Match trailer to conditions: craw trailer in cold water (slower fall, bigger profile), swimbait trailer when swimming, chunk trailer for flipping.
