Jig (Casting & Pitching) Fishing on Canyon Lake

Canyon Lake · Arizona · West

Canyon Lake is a 950-acre reservoir located in central Arizona between Phoenix and Payson, known for its pristine clear water and dramatic rocky shorelines. The lake features extensive coves, submerged structure, and rocky ledges that create ideal habitat for both largemouth and smallmouth bass. Its consistent year-round fishing and scenic canyon setting make it a premier destination for Arizona bass anglers.

A lead or tungsten head with a weed guard, skirt, and soft plastic trailer. Fished on the bottom by pitching, casting, or slow-rolling. The jig imitates crawfish and bottom-dwelling forage. More big bass have been caught on jigs than any other lure category — it's the lure that separates serious anglers.

Seasonal Tactics on Canyon Lake

spring

Lake: Spring brings excellent topwater action as bass move shallow to spawn around rocky coves and submerged brush. Water temperatures rising through the 60s trigger aggressive feeding, making this peak season for both numbers and quality fish.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Pre-spawn is prime season — pitch brown/green pumpkin jig to 45° bank transitions and rocky points.

summer

Lake: Summer fishing shifts to deeper structure and ledges as bass retreat to cooler water, with early morning topwater and deep-diving crankbaits producing best during the heat. Night fishing around rocky points and main lake structure becomes increasingly productive.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Football jig on offshore ledges 15–30 feet. Swimming jig around grass edges at dawn.

fall

Lake: Fall cooling water temperatures push bass back to shallow rocky areas and coves, creating excellent opportunities with crankbaits and swimbaits around structure. The moderate temperatures and improved daytime bite make this a rewarding season for targeting quality bass.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Swim a jig around baitfish schools near points and flats. Shad trailer colors in fall.

winter

Lake: Winter fishing remains consistent with bass holding around deeper rocky points and ledges, responding well to slower presentations like jigs and Texas rigged worms. Clear water conditions allow for sight-fishing in shallower areas on sunny days.

Jig (Casting & Pitching): Slowest presentation — drag a 3/8 oz football jig on deep hard bottom. Barely move it.

Best Conditions

All seasons, all depths, all cover types; most effective in 50–70°F water; excellent in pre-spawn and when fish are on hard bottom

Pro Tip

Match trailer to conditions: craw trailer in cold water (slower fall, bigger profile), swimbait trailer when swimming, chunk trailer for flipping.
